Wooster Set to Face Ladies in NCAC Tournament Quarterfinal Match-Up

Morgan Wagers

This Week's Outlook: The College of Wooster women's tennis team, listed as the seventh seed in the 2017 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, squares off against second-seeded Kenyon College at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 28 at Granville, Ohio in the quarterfinal round.

Media Coverage: Fans can follow Wooster's quarterfinal match as well as subsequent results through the NCAC's Championship Central web page. Fans can also follow the team's Twitter account, @WooTennis, for updates.

A Look-Back at Last Week: Wooster arrives on a two-match winning streak behind an impressive, all-in performance against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday before a 9-0 sweep over Heidelberg University the following afternoon. In the Fighting Scots' 5-4 win over the Battling Bishops, first-year Mali Zemedkun stepped up big at No. 6 singles, winning 7-5, 6-4 in the decisive match to give Wooster to its first victory over OWU since 2014. The following day, the Scots topped Heidelberg 9-0 to finish the regular season with a .500 record for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

Holy Molé:  Capping a note-worthy career while clad in plaid is senior Rachel Molé, who on Sunday moved into a tie with 1989 alumna Jennifer Lister for the most wins all-time at No. 1 doubles with 36. In addition, the standout senior ranks fourth in program history in career combined wins (singles and doubles) with 84 while standing two victories back of third-place honors.

Double(s) Vision: Assertive doubles play has no doubt been a key factor for the Black and Gold's success this year, with each of the Scots' three primary doubles pairs post a winning record this season. Molé and junior Morgan Wagers are 11-9 at the top spot, followed by first-year Joy Li and senior Elizabeth Brewington's 9-6 record at No. 2. Worth noting, second flight doubles has been a lockdown for the Scots this season, as Li and Brewington sported a seven-match win streak earlier this season which included a win over the pair from 29th-ranked Denison. At No. 3, senior Dora Mase and first-year Shannon Sertz sported a four-match win streak earlier in the season and come into Friday's quarterfinal as winners in seven of their last 11 matches.

A Slice of Joy: From the start, Li has been nothing but solid in her first season donning the Black and Gold, producing an overall singles record of 11-9 while going 8-8 in dual matches, with three of her twenty career matches coming against nationally-ranked foes. Particularly, Li broke through during the Scots' Spring Break trip, as the first-year posted a combined record of 9-1 while helping lead Wooster to a 4-1 record as a team.

Weekly Conference Honors: This season, Sertz and Molé picked up NCAC Athlete-of-the-Week honors nearly a month apart. Sertz earned her first career nod on March 20 after posting a perfect 4-0 record on the week, including a match-clinching win at No. 5 singles against Concordia Univesity (Wis.). Meanwhile, this past week, Molé garnered her third career weekly conference honor with a 4-0 record on the week. The senior went 2-0 with partner Wagers at No. 1 doubles before winning two more at the No. 2 singles spot.
