Scots Open at Kenyon Invite, Gear up for Next Week's ITA Central Regional

The College of Wooster women's tennis team took part in the two-day Kenyon College Invitational on Sept. 16 and 17 at Gambier, Ohio.

In singles, sophomore Mali Zemedkun advanced to the first-place match in the No. 7 singles flight, dropping the final 2-6, 2-6 after opening with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jordan Dodson from Ohio Northern University.

Classmate Joy Li, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year, dropped her first two matches of the season in the No. 1 singles flight before taking the seventh-place match by retirement. In that match, Li took the first set 6-3.

First-year Sarah Duran dropped her opener before advancing to the fifth-place match, as she lost a close two-setter, 4-6, 5-7.

Similarly, senior Morgan Wagers won her consolation match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, before falling in the fifth-place match, 1-6, 1-6.

In a grinder of a consolation, first-year Kendra Devereux bounced back from an opening-round loss with a three-set win over Denison University's Lucy Deal, winning 7-5, 5-7 1-0 (6). In the fifth-place match, Devereux lost 0-6, 0-6.

In doubles, Wagers and Li took their opener, 8-6, before dropping the semifinal, 2-8. In the third-place match, the pair lost 6-8 to claim fourth in the No. 1 flight.

Sophomore Shannon Sertz and first-year Laura Haley lost their first two matches before winning the seventh-place match in the No. 2 flight, 9-7.

Following in their track were Devereux and Duran, who took seventh-place in the third flight, 8-6.

Wooster returns to action next weekend for the ITA Central Regional Tournament, hosted by Oberlin College on Sept. 22-25.
