Wooster Tops Mount Union in Home Opener, 6-3

Morgan Wagers
Mali Zemedkun

The College of Wooster women's tennis team came out on the right side of a trio of tightly-contested doubles matches with wins at the first and third flights, and the Fighting Scots' bottom three singles picked up wins as did sophomore Joy Li at the top flight during a 6-3 win over the University of Mount Union in the Black and Gold's home opener on Monday afternoon at Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster, Ohio.

In doubles action, first-years Kendra Devereux and Sarah Duran won by the widest margin of the three matches at 8-4. Li and senior Morgan Wagers tipped the balance of the match the Scots' (3-1) way with a doubles-closing 8-6 win over Mount Union's (2-1) Gretchen Groves and Kayla Johnston.

Li's 8-1 win in singles – which were contested via a single eight-game pro set – officially clinched the match for Wooster. Of note, the sophomore improved to 4-0 in dual-match singles action on the year, and has only dropped seven games in over that span.

Further down the lineup, the Scots fourth-through-sixth singles student-athletes logged key wins as well. Sophomore Mali Zemedkun kicked off the trio's success with an 8-6 win at No. 6, and that was quickly followed by Wagers' 8-3 win at No. 4, which brought the Scots within a point of clinching the win.

Later on, first-year Laura Haley won her match at No. 5 singles 8-6.

Next, Wooster hosts Calvin College (3-1) and Marietta College (1-3) on Saturday, March 3 at Aspen Racquet Club with the first of three scheduled matches in the triangular schedule to start at 9 a.m.
