The College of Wooster women's tennis team had good fortune on Friday the 13th, as the Fighting Scots picked up win No. 13 with a 9-0 blanking over Westminster College (Pa.) at New Wilmington, Pa. With the win, Wooster now has the fourth-most wins in program history and the most since the 1996-97 team won a program-record 16 matches.
Wooster's (13-2) bottom three singles flights stole the show as senior Morgan Wagers, first-year Laura Haley, and sophomore Mali Zemedkun didn't drop a game, while sophomore Shannon Sertz was nearly perfect during her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
At the top of Wooster's lineup, sophomore Joy Li rolled past Westminster's (9-8) Gabriele Eaborn. With the win, Li now has 17 on the year in singles play, and that's tied for the fourth-most in program history, and the top mark since Kirsten Schriver won 17 matches during the 1996-97 campaign.
First-year Sarah Duran rounded out the singles results with a pair of 6-3 sets.
In doubles play, Duran and first-year Kendra Devereux clinched Wooster's first point of the day with an 8-1 win out of the third flight. Haley and Sertz won 8-3 at No. 2, and Li and Wagers took the top flight 8-2.
Wooster's (0-1 North Coast Athletic Conference East Division) Pennsylvania swing continues on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. match against Allegheny College (6-6, 0-0 NCAC East) at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa.
