2018 ITA Tennis Academic Awards Release

A quartet of student-athletes from The College of Wooster women's tennis team were among the recipients of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Scholar-Athlete award for the 2017-18 season, as announced by the organization on Tuesday. Additionally, the Fighting Scots were recognized by the ITA as an All-Academic Team.

Sophomores Joy Li and Shannon Sertz earned their second ITA Scholar-Athlete certificates, and they were joined on the team by first-year Kendra Devereux and sophomore Mali Zemedkun.

Li, a first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree in singles and a second-team selection in doubles, won her first 16 singles matches in dual play this past year as part of a 17-2 mark in the first flight. The sophomore was equally impressive in doubles play with a 15-5 record at No. 1.

Sertz, a steady contributor at No. 3 singles, went 14-5 in dual play. Among her wins included a key 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Calvin College on March 3, and the Fairview, Pa., native also won in doubles with first-year partner Laura Haley in what turned into an eventual 5-4 win for the Scots.

Devereux factored in heavily at No. 3 doubles, where the rookie picked up seven wins in dual play, including by an 8-3 count against NCAC rival Wittenberg University on March 29. Deverux's singles resume included a 6-0, 6-0 blanking over Allegheny College's Wenzhuo Yang, and four wins overall.

Zemedkun anchored down the sixth singles flight for the Scots, and she logged nine wins there, and 11 wins overall. She opened the spring by winning six of her first seven singles matches, headlined by a 7-5, 6-0 win over conference foe Wittenberg.

Wooster went 15-5 this past year with the wins ranking as the second-most in program history and one shy of the 1996-97 squad's single-season program-best 16.

ITA Scholar-Athlete status is awarded to varsity letterwinners with at least a 3.50 GPA for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present institution for at least two semesters. ITA All-Academic Team criteria takes into account the current academic year GPAs for all varsity letterwinners, and must be at least a 3.20.
