Beal and Riley Lead a Wooster Sweep at the Kilt Classic

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Lizzi Beal-to-KateLynn Riley combination was as good as it gets this weekend, and The College of Wooster steamrolled through Manchester College and Baldwin-Wallace College on Friday and Westminster (Pa.) College and La Roche College on Saturday to go 4-0 during the Kilt Classic.

The Fighting Scots (7-2) won six consecutive sets on Friday, notching wins over Manchester (25-16, 25-21, 25-21) and Baldwin-Wallace (25-14, 25-19, 25-23) with little resistance. Then on Saturday, Westminster delivered Wooster its only lost set of the tournament, but the Scots still prevailed over the Titans (25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18), and then conquered the La Roche Lady Redhawks (25-13, 25-17, 25-14) to complete the weekend sweep.

Sophomore setter, Beal, engineered the Scots' offensive attack as she totaled 107 assists over 11 sets, bringing her average assists up to 8.46 per set on the season. She also tallied 15 kills and 47 digs, rounding out an exceptional weekend.

KateLynn Riley smashed down kills at an impressive pace, as the senior amassed 65 kills during the tournament, with 62 coming in Wooster's first three matches. Against Westminster she totaled 22 kills and only one error on 45 attempts, and in the three-set win over Baldwin-Wallace she totaled 18 more kills as part of a staggering .533 hitting percentage. Both Riley and Beal were named to the all-tournament team.

The Scots had several other notable contributions, including freshman Kelly Johnson's 71 digs (5.9 per set), with a career-high 31 coming against Westminster. Erin Webster and Margaret Raabe did their part at the service line, as they totaled nine and six service aces, respectively. Sarah Lorch and Sarah Hawke gave Wooster's opponents trouble around the net as they both turned in seven block assists over the weekend.

Wooster will hit the road to battle John Carroll University on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m.
