Wooster Outlasts Oberlin Behind Freshman Johnson's Clutch Serving

In a match that took over two hours to complete, The College of Wooster volleyball team went the distance and outlasted Oberlin College 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 15-6) in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Friday night at Oberlin, Ohio.

 

The Fighting Scots (13-5, 4-3 NCAC) traded blows with the Yeowomen (9-10, 2-3 NCAC) early on, but Wooster would gain momentum in the final set behind first-year libero Kelley Johnson's clutch serving. Johnson began the fifth set with a service ace, and she would go on to serve up another five straight points to give the Scots a 6-0 cushion. Wooster would remain in control throughout the set, and freshman Melissa Morgan delivered the final blow, serving the matches last four points to close out the victory.

 

Morgan would also chip in with 17 digs and eight kills, while Johnson added a team-high 21 digs on the night. Sophomore setter Lizzi Beal dished out a game-high 47 assists, and KateLynn Riley paced the Scots at the net, blasting down 18 kills and tallying seven total blocks (three solo, four assists) in the win. Also chipping in on the attack was Erin Webster who totaled 12 kills.

 

Wooster will be back on the court again tomorrow, when it heads back home to host NCAC challenger Ohio Wesleyan University (0-19, 0-6 NCAC) and non-league opponent Case Western Reserve University (15-3) at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively.
