Scot Spikers Gain Experience at ONU Invitational

Competing against some solid regional competition, The College of Wooster volleyball team compiled a 1-3 record at the Ohio Northern University Invitational this weekend, dropping Defiance College in four sets, but falling to Ohio Northern, Heidelberg University, and Thomas More College at the ONU Sports Center at Ada, Ohio.

Following Friday's opening match loss to Ohio Northern (15-25, 23-25, 16-25), which the Scots (1-4) led 20-16 in the second set, Wooster upended Defiance (25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 27-25) behind Lizzi Beal's strong serving that sealed the win.

Erin Webster led the hitters with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Sarah Hawke was efficient in chipping in seven kills and just one error. Kelley Johnson paced the backcourt with 22 digs, and Zoe Zwegat, who had six blocks (2 solo, 4 assists) against Ohio Northern, added another five (2 solo, 3 assists) in the win over Defiance.

In second day action, the Scots came up short against Heidelberg (18-25, 20-25, 23-25) and Thomas More (7-25, 14-25, 21-25), but had several competitive moments in both matches. In set three against the 'Berg, Margaret Raabe cut Wooster's 24-15 deficit to 24-22 by serving seven straight points. Then in the third set of the Thomas More match, Meredith Kiefer and Devin Grandi came off the bench to spark a five-point Wooster run that tied the set 19-19.

The Scots will look to get back into the win column on Sept. 10 when they compete in the Marcia French Memorial Tournament at Berea, Ohio.
