Scots Slowed in Tri-Match with DePauw, Defiance

The College of Wooster ran into some tough competition in its tri-match Saturday, as the Fighting Scots were swept by DePauw University and Defiance College, two programs that were a combined 23-5 entering the day, in volleyball action at Greencastle, Ind.

The Scots (5-12, 0-2 NCAC) gave the Tigers (14-1, 2-0 NCAC) some resistance in the tri-match opener, as they battled them to a 13-13 tie in the first set, and were knotted 19-19 in the third set, but ultimately, they dropped the North Coast Athletic Conference contest by set scores of 17-25, 16-25, 20-25.

Wooster was setback against Defiance (11-4) as well, although it nearly took the opening set, which could have changed the complexion of the match. Instead, the Scots were edged out 23-25, 14-25, 14-25.

Overall, Lydia Webster led the Scots' hitters with 13 kills, which came on balanced performances of seven kills against DePauw and six against Defiance. Another highlight was the offensive effort of Zoe Zwegat, who recorded eight kills with an impressive .667 hitting percentage.

The Scots will play just their second home match of the year Tuesday when they host Denison University (11-5, 1-1 NCAC) for a 7 p.m. start at Timken Gymnasium.
