Wooster Puts Together Scoring Runs in Loss to ONU

The College of Wooster showed its resilience against Ohio Northern University, as it battled to put together some large scoring runs in the second and third sets, but ultimately, the Polar Bears hung on to sweep the Fighting Scots 25-9, 25-15, 26-24 in a non-conference volleyball match-up Wednesday evening at Ada, Ohio.

Wooster (5-16) started to make things interesting about midway through the second set. Trailing 13-4, the Scots went on an 8-1 scoring run, which include four kills from Paige Parker, to pull within two at 14-12. Ohio Northern (12-7) regained control and closed out the set strong, but Wooster carried over its positive momentum into the third set.

It was there that the Scots jumped out to an 8-2 advantage, and it continued to play with a lead until the Polar Bears knotted the score at 16-16. The two teams were tied six more times after that, including at 24-24, but Ohio Northern eked out the last two points to earned the hard-fought victory.

Wooster recorded a .205 hitting percentage in the third set, which was well above Ohio Northern's .125 mark.

The Scots' attack was a balanced effort between Lydia Webster (7 kills), Parker (6 kills), Catherine Benton (6 kills), and Erica Skillman (5 kills).

Kaitlin Banko collected a game-high 15 digs, Rachel Sell added 12 assists, and Zoe Zwegat led all players in blocks with one solo, and four assists.

The Scots will look to rebound tomorrow night when they host Akron-Wayne College at 7 p.m.
