The College of Wooster volleyball team outperformed its seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, as the eighth-seeded Fighting Scots upended the No. 6 seed, Allegheny College, in the seventh-place match, to end the 2014 season on a high note Saturday afternoon at Springfield, Ohio.

The Scots (8-22) lost to the Gators (18-15) in three sets just 10 days ago during the regular season, but the tables were turned in this match-up, as it was Wooster winning a decisive four-setter, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20, and 25-17.

The offense came together for a memorable performance, as Savannah Moore (18 kills), Lydia Webster (14 kills), Ksenia Klue (13 kills), and Anna Emmick (9 kills) each matched or surpassed their individual season-highs in the victory. Overall, Wooster recorded 64 kills, which were 11 more than it had in any other match this year.

It was a season-best day for several other Scots as well, including setters Sydney Virgin (27 assists) and Brittany Nicholson (26 assists), and back row players Rachel Sell (38 digs) and Kaitlin Banko (21 digs).

Wooster opened its tournament slate Friday evening against top-seeded Wittenberg University (25-3), and gave the Tigers quite a scare in the third set. The Scots led 14-9, 16-12, and as late as 19-18, with Laura Sherer serving five straight points during that stretch, but Wittenberg, ranked No. 4 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, rallied to take the set and the match, 25-13, 25-16, and 25-19.

Early on Saturday, the Scots lost a closely-contested match against Denison University (20-9) by set scores of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-22. One highlight was in the first set, when Wooster came back from six points down (18-12) to take a 21-20 lead, but the Big Red escaped with the win. Also down six in the third set (23-17), the Scots pulled within two at 23-21, and 24-22, before being edged out.

For the tournament, Moore paced the hitters with 36 kills, while Klue (28), Webster (25), Emmick (12), and Megan Mey (12) rounded out the leaders. Emmick led the squad with eight total blocks, and Nicholson (54 assists) and Virgin (46 assists) combined for exactly 100 assists.

Also impressive, Sell had 76 digs (7.60 per set), which were the most digs by anyone at the tournament, while her six aces were third-most.
