A late rally in a hard-fought second set gave The College of Wooster volleyball team a needed jolt to help propel the Fighting Scots to a 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 25-8) season-opening win over Thiel College on Tuesday night inside Timken Gymnasium. The win marked the first in a season opener for the College since 2011, and was the first season-opening sweep since 2005.

Wooster opened up a four-point advantage at 13-9 in the first set. Thiel clawed back within two at 15-13 before a pair of Tomcat errors pushed the Scots' advantage back to four. Freshman Marija Cyvas was able to push the lead out to seven at 23-16 with her third kill in the frame. Senior Savannah Moore led the way with a set-high six kills.

In the second set, Thiel was able to climb out of a five-point hole at 17-12 to take a two-point advantage at 22-20. Wooster would recover with three-straight points in taking a 23-22 edge. The Tomcats were able to ward off two set points before a kill from junior Anna Emmick put the set away.

Wooster left no doubt in the third set, racing out to an 8-0 lead behind back-to-back aces from Moore, and later, added a 7-0 runto open up an 18-4 advantage. The eight points allowed were the fewest by a Scot opponent in a non-fifth set frame since Kenyon College was held to seven on Oct. 4, 2008.

Moore recorded a double-double with 11 kils and 11 digs, while junior Lydia Webster led the attack with a match-high 13 kills.

Defensively, Wooster held Thiel to a -.038 attack percentage, highlighted by freshman Gabrielle Basinski's match-high 16 digs, and four blocks each from Emmick and freshman Rachel Topper.

Wooster returns to action on Friday, Sept. 4. The Scots travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take part in the Bearcat Challenge on the campus of St. Vincent College. Wooster opens play at the tournament with a 5 p.m. match versus Franciscan.
