Wooster Wins Seventh-Straight, Off to Best Start in Over 40 Years

Ashley Plassard

The College of Wooster volleyball team improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1969 with its 3-1 win (12-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16) over Ohio Christian University on Saturday morning in Oberlin, Ohio.

The Fighting Scots could not overcome first-set miscues as the Trailblazers (3-5) established a dominant block early, with two blocks helping key an 8-0 run. Ohio Christian would add two more blocks in the frame.

Wooster was able to open up a five-point lead at 15-10 in the second set off a kill from junior Lydia Webster. Ohio Christian stormed back on Lexi Jacobs' block, making it a one-point set. Junior Anna Emmick caught fire with two kills and two aces down the stretch to help even up the match.

Once again, it was Emmick who helped shift the momentum in the third set. A kill from the middle blocker speared a 5-0 run, putting the Scots up 14-9. Two kills each from Emmick and senior Savannah Moore, coupled with an 8-for-9 sideout clip down the stretch, resulted in a two-sets-to-one lead.

A kill and ace from Moore, the reining NCAC Player of the Week, helped stake Wooster to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set, and later, the Scots pushed their advantage to six at 13-7 behind a double-block from sophomore Ksenia Klue and first-year Ashley Plassard. Moore's fourth kill of the frame extended the lead back to six at 19-13 after Ohio Christian had rattled off three-straight points.

Emmick led the way offensively with a match-high 11 kills, while the Scots' balanced offense shone through with Moore, Plassard, and Webster each recording at least eight kills.

Defensively, first-year Gabrielle Basinski paced the team with 21 digs and Plassard registered three blocks.

Wooster is idle until its home tournament, the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic. The two-day, seven-team tournament takes place Sept. 18-19 inside Timken Gymnasium.
