Wooster's Eight-Match Win Streak Halted at Home Tourney, as Scots Split Four on Weekend

The College of Wooster dedicated its home tournament in honor of Ginny Hunt, the first coach in program history. Alumnae of the program joined head coach Sarah Davis and current players for the dedication on behalf of Hunt.

The College of Wooster volleyball team's win streak came to a halt at eight matches, as the Fighting Scots split four outings in their home tournament – the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic – Friday and Saturday inside Timken Gymnasium.

Prior to Saturday's matches, a ribbon ceremony was held dedicating the tournament in honor of Hunt, the founder of the volleyball program at the College. This season marks the 50th in school history.

Wooster opened the weekend with a 25-18, 25-23, 27-25 sweep over Capital University. The Scots used a pair of 4-0 runs to open up a 21-15 advantage in the first set after the Crusaders had tied the frame at 13. Outside hitters Savannah Moore and Lydia Webster each had a kill to highlight the runs.

The second set featured a late rally, keyed by all-tournament team honoree Anna Emmick. The junior served up three aces in a span of four points to help Wooster to a 22-20 lead. The Scots had not held a lead in the set until 21-20.

Wooster suffered its first setback of the year in the nightcap on Friday, dropping a 25-16, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19 match to Albion College. A 6-0 run, highlighted by a Jordan Murray service ace and kills from Moore and Ashley Plassard, opened up a six-point edge in the second set, and the Scots held off a late rally by the Britons with Webster finishing the set on her sixth kill of the frame.

Slow starts by Wooster in sets three and four helped Albion clinch the match.

Wooster rebounded with a hard-fought 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 win over the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Saturday morning. Emmick and Megan Mey helped secure the first set with a double-block after Pitt.-Bradford had cut its deficit to one.

The second set again saw the Scots gain momentum late. Shortly after the Panthers cut their deficit to two (20-18), Wooster received a boost on sophomore Ksenia Klue's kill and then increased its lead to five on the ensuing point (24-19) thanks to a double-block from Plassard and sophomore Becca Grunder. An attack error by Pitt.-Bradford sealed the set.

The Scots warded off another late charge by the Panthers in the third set. It was 23-21 when a block from Plassard and Rachel Topper brought Wooster to match point, and three points later, Plassard clinched it via a kill.

The Scots ran into a tough break in their final match of the weekend, playing emotionally-charged Bluffton University, which was minutes removed from a five-set win over Capital. The Beavers overcame an 18-17 deficit in the first frame to sweep wooster 25-19, 25-10, 25-12.

Klue led Wooster's attack on the weekend with 2.46 kills per set, while complementing her were Webster (2.25 kps) and Moore (2.08 kps). Emmick was the defensive leader at the net with 1.15 blocks per set, and first-year Gabrielle Basinski recorded a team-best 5.75 digs per frame.

Wooster returns to action on Wednesday with a non-conference tilt at the University of Akron - Wayne College. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
