Wooster Records Sweep in Final Match Before Conference Play

ORRVILLE, Ohio – The College of Wooster volleyball team rolled to a 25-9, 25-12, 25-7 sweep over the University of Akron Wayne College on Wednesday afternoon. The match marked the final tune-up for the Fighting Scots before North Coast Athletic Conference play starts this weekend.

Wooster (10-2) recorded nine aces in the first set en route to the 25-9 win. Junior Laura Sherer and first-year Eva Stebel each contributed three aces apiece. The Scots dominated throughout, starting the frame with a 7-0 run and adding a pair of 6-0 swings down the stretch.

Led by six kills over a nine-point stretch from first-year McKenzie Reese, Wooster opened up a 16-2 lead in the second frame. The Scots capped the 25-12 set with a back-row kill from Sherer.

Wooster closed the match on a big run, led by sophomore Sydney Virgin's five aces.

Overall, first-year Eleri Miller led the Scots with 11 kills, and defensively, Gabrielle Basinski had seven digs.

Gabby Schmucker paced Wayne (0-3) with five kills.

Wooster set two single-match team records, a program-best .392 attack percentage and 20 service aces. The Scots' previous best for aces in a match was 15 against La Roche College in a 2010 match.

The Scots open NCAC play with a 7 p.m. tilt against red-hot Ohio Wesleyan University (14-1) at home on Friday, as part of Black & Gold Weekend.
