Wooster Drops Conference Opener to Ohio Wesleyan

 Lydia Webster

The College of Wooster volleyball team had a boost of energy late, but could not muster a big enough run as visiting Ohio Wesleyan University swept the Fighting Scots 25-14, 25-10, 25-22 on Black & Gold Weekend inside Timken Gymnasium. The match was the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

Wooster (10-3, 0-1 NCAC), led by two kills from Lydia Webster, hung close with Ohio Wesleyan (15-1, 1-0 NCAC) in the early going of the first set. The Battling Bishops, winners of 15 straight, eventually pulled ahead by as many as 12, though. Interesting to note, the Scots' hitters were not blocked in the first set by an Ohio Wesleyan squad that entered the week ranked ninth nationally in total blocks.

The Bishops' blockers found their form in the second frame, with five team blocks en route to taking a 2-0 set lead.

Wooster fought hard in the third stanza and had some momentum late. Two-straight kills from Webster tied the set at 19, and it was even again two points later off of a Megan Mey kill. A double-block from Anna Emmick and Savannah Moore gave the Scots a renewed boost of energy at 22-23, but Ohio Wesleyan's Brianna La Croix was able to put down the ensuring kill to make it match-point for the guests.

Webster led Wooster's attack with 10 kills on the night, while defensively, the team was led by three blocks from Emmick and 15 digs from Gabrielle Basinski.

The Scots are right back in action Saturday with a twin bill at Oberlin College. Wooster takes on Oberlin (4-7, 1-0 NCAC) at 1 p.m., then Earlham College (4-11) in a non-conference tilt at 3 p.m.
