Wooster Hangs Tough With Nationally Ranked Wittenberg

 Gabrielle Basinski

The College of Wooster volleyball team battled hard, tying the second set at 24, before falling to seventh-ranked Wittenberg University in three sets on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Ohio.

Wooster (11-6, 0-4 North Coast Athletic Conferece) had a 10-2 run in the second set that culminated with the Fighting Scots tying the frame at 22. Wooster received kills from sophomores Sydney Virgin and Ksenia Klue that tied the set back up at 23 and 24 before Wittenberg rattled off a pair of points to claim the frame.

The Scots' energy carried over to the third set, in which the College had several leads, including at 14-13. Klue helped key a 6-0 run to give the Scots their first lead of the match at 10-9. Junior Megan Mey put the Scots back on top at 12-11, which was followed by a double-block from Klue and Anna Emmick, pushing the College's lead to two. A late 6-0 run from the hosts would put the match out of reach.

Junior Lydia Webster led the attack for the College with eight kills. Defensively, the Scots would be paced by first-year Gabrielle Basinski's 13 digs.

Wittenberg (14-1, 4-0 NCAC) was led by Maddie Fischer's 12 kills, including five in the first set – a set in which the Tigers hit .400.

Wooster is idle until next week Saturday when the Scots take a break from conference play with a tri-match at Anderson College. Wooster is scheduled to play Franklin College (12-9) at 3 p.m. and Anderson University (4-11) at 5 p.m.
