Opening Set Momentum Does Not Carry Over in Pair of Losses for Wooster

`
 Anna Emmick

The College of Wooster volleyball team opened its non-conference tri-match with a first-set win, but could not carry over the momentum, falling in four sets to Franklin College (18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22) and Anderson University (25-13, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon in Anderson, Ind.

Junior Anna Emmick sparked Wooster (11-8) early in the first set against Franklin (15-9). Emmick, playing in her home state, had a kill and block early to stake the Fighting Scots to a 5-1 lead. She would go on to record four of the team's 12 kills in the opening frame.

Wooster rallied back in the fourth set of the Franklin match. Down five at 17-12, the Scots regrouped after a timeout to go on a 3-0 swing and cut their deficit to two. Wooster would add a 4-0 stretch moments later, keyed by a block and kill from junior Lydia Webster to take a 19-18 lead. The Scots would again lead at 21-20 after a Franklin attack error before the Grizzlies rattled off four of the next five points to take the match.

The Scots established a dominant block mid-way through the second set against Anderson (5-14). Webster recorded a solo block, before teaming with senior Savannah Moore on two-straight double blocks to swing the frame in Wooster's favor at 18-16. Wooster would push its lead to 20-16 before losing serve. Kills from Moore and junior Megan Mey closed the set in Wooster's favor.

Wooster would lead as late as 21-20 in the third frame versus Anderson.

Webster finished with a team-best 23 kills between the two matches. Defensively, the Scots were led by first-year Gabrielle Basinski's 54 digs.

Also of note, Moore recorded her third double-double of the year against Franklin with 20 digs and 10 assists.

Wooster concludes its three-match Indiana swing with a 2 p.m. North Coast Athletic Conference tilt against DePauw University (12-5, 2-1 NCAC) on Sunday.
