Wooster Falls in Indiana Finale

Brittany Nicholson

The College of Wooster volleyball team had another strong start, winning the first set against DePauw University, but the host Tigers would claim the next three sets to take the match 18-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-12 on Sunday afternoon in Greencastle, Ind.

Wooster (11-9, 0-5 North Coast Athletic Conference) maintained composure to open up some breathing room late in the opening stanza. After DePauw (13-5, 3-1 NCAC) closed its deficit two at 17-15, the Scots went to work. Kills from Lydia Webster, Savannah Moore, and Ksenia Klue on three successive points, pushed Wooster's advantage to five. Moments later, the Scots would close out the frame with a 4-1 run.

DePauw gradually opened up a comfortable lead in the second frame before Wooster began to claw back. A kill from Anna Emmick put the College within striking distance at 18-14, but the Tigers won the next four points to put the frame out of reach.

Wooster would lead as late as 20-19 in the third frame after a DePauw service error. The Tigers would quickly regroup winning the next two rallies to take a 21-20 lead. Wooster would close to one at 24-23 after a kill from Webster, but was unable to win the ensuing rally.

DePauw pulled away late in the fourth frame with a 6-0 run.

Webster led the team on the afternoon with nine kills, and would be followed by Klue's eight. Defensively, first-year Gabrielle Basinki led the team with 22 digs, the seventh time she's been over 20 this year. Brittany Nicholson finished one dig shy of a double-double with 18 assists and nine digs.

Wooster, in the midst of a six-match road trip, travels to Steubenville, Ohio to take on Franciscan University (8-13) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The two teams met previously this year, with Wooster taking a 3-0 win at the Bearcat Challenge in Latrobe, Pa. Megan Mey led the way with nine kills, while Webster was one kill shy of a double-double.
