Balanced Attack, Late Block Propels Wooster to Sweep Over Thiel

 Anna Emmick
 Megan Mey

A late swing by The College of Wooster volleyball team that culminated in a block by seniors Megan Mey and Lydia Webster kept a sweep in tact as the Fighting Scots topped host Thiel College 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 on Wednesday evening at Greenville, Pa.

Wooster (4-1) found success in the middle early in the first set when senior Anna Emmick recorded a pair of kills during a 7-0 run that helped tip the match in favor of the Scots, and put the College up 11-9. Later in the set, Emmick played a key role in extending the lead to five (15-10) with a kill and combined forces with junior Ksenia Klue on a block.

Thiel (3-2) hung around early in the second set, and was within two at 10-8, but a kill from Klue and back-to-back kills from Emmick shifted the momentum back on the Scots side. Further along in the frame, Webster heated up from the outside and came through with a trio of kills that were coupled with a service ace from Gabrielle Basinski that pushed Wooster's lead to five at 19-14, a lead that eventually was extended to seven at set's end.

The third set was more tightly contested, but Wooster was able pull ahead by five (15-10) thanks to a balanced attack with kills from Webster and Mey. Thiel did not go quietly and mounted an 8-3 run to take a 23-22 lead on a Wooster attack error. The Tomcats coughed the lead up immediately with a service error and an attack error, prior to Wooster's match-ending block by Mey and Webster.

Emmick led the way at the net on the evening with nine kills and three blocks. The Scots' well-balanced attack also had big contributions from Klue and Webster, who combined for 14 kills and three blocks.

In the back row, Basinski led the way with 14 digs, while Klue backed her up with 13.

Thiel was paced by Shelby Friedel's nine kills and Hayley Macko's 17 digs.

Next, Wooster travels to Pennsylvania for the second straight weekend. The Scots will play at the Northwestern Pennsylvania Classic, and open up with Grove City College (2-3) at 6 p.m. on Friday at Allegheny College in Meadville.
