John Carroll Tops Wooster in Four Sets

Marija Cyvas

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster volleyball team dropped its tune up for the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic as visiting John Carroll University took a 25-14, 20-25, 25-11, 25-15 decision on Tuesday evening at Timken Gymnasium.

John Carroll (6-5) used a 6-0 run in the middle of the first set to open up an eight-point lead at 16-8. Senior Anna Emmick heated up from the outside for Wooster (7-2) with three kills down the stretch.

Wooster's front line took over early in the second set, as the Scots opened up a four-point advantage at 11-7 behind back-to-back blocks. Senior Lydia Webster had a hand in both plays and teamed with classmate Megan Mey on the first one before joining forces with Marija Cyvas on the second. Emmick caught fire towards the end of the set and delivered three of Wooster's final four points via kills to help put the set away.

Wooster pulled within four at 11-7 in the third set, but John Carroll scored multiple points each time it got a side-out down the stretch.

The Scots were right there in the early parts of the fourth set as a kill from Ksenia Klue knotted the score at seven, and then Webster and Klue recorded consecutive solo blocks to tie the frame back up at nine. However, a 4-0 run a few points later swung the momentum back in favor of the Blue Streaks.

Emmick continued her stellar play and led the way with 14 kills while hitting .444 on the night. Webster backed that up with eight kills and four blocks, while sophomore Gabrielle Basinski paced the back row with 22 digs.

Maddie McDowell and Alexa Webber each had 16 kills for John Carroll. As a team, the Blue Streaks hit .275 for the match.

Wooster opens play at the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic against Bluffton University (6-3) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
