Block Party at Timken Leads to 4-0 Weekend for Wooster in Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster volleyball team's front line controlled the net all weekend long as the Fighting Scots won a five-set thriller to open play at its home tournament, The Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic, and then went on to sweep its final three opponents of the weekend at Timken Gymnasium.

Wooster (11-2) opened play with a 27-25, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 19-7 win over 2015 NCAA Div. III Championships qualifier Bluffton University on Friday. Then Wooster rattled off 3-0 wins against Capital University (25-21, 25-8, 25-22), Franciscan University of Steubenville (25-11, 25-16, 25-16), and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (27-25, 25-16, 25-21).

Senior Lydia Webster averaged 2.69 kills per set to couple with 1.46 blocks per frame on the weekend.

Wooster's front line led the way against Bluffton, as the Scots recorded a season-high 11 blocks with sophomore Marija Cyvas and senior Lydia Webster recording eight and seven respectively. In fact, the duo teamed up for the game-winning block on match point. Three points earlier, Webster teamed with junior Taylor Mathews to give Wooster a 17-16 lead but Bluffton had an immediate counter with a MacKenzie McFarlin kill to knot the score at 17.

Against Bluffton, Wooster also warded off a set point with a kill from senior Anna Emmick that tied the match at 16.

In Friday's nightcap, Wooster hit a season-best .338 against Capital. Notable, the Scots nearly hit .500 in the second set with 11 kills on 22 swings with just one error. In that set, Wooster strung together a pair of 5-0 runs that were highlighted by back-to-back aces off the serve of sophomore Jordan Murray, points that eventually helped to open a double-digit lead at 15-5.

In Saturday's first match, Wooster again dominated at the net against Franciscan, and this time the Scots recorded 10 swats in the match. Emmick led the way with five blocks while freshman Kyana Harris, junior Mayia Karagianni, freshman Erica Roberts, and Webster all had at least two blocks to their credit.

Wooster's blocking theme continued in its match against Bradford, as the Scots tallied 10 more blocks to finish the weekend with 36. Webster led the way against the Panthers with six blocks, include two solo ones, while Emmick backed that performance up with three of her own.

Klue and Webster both earned spots on the all-tournament team. For the weekend, Klue led the Scots with 41 kills while Webster tallied up 35 kills and 19 blocks.

Defensively, Cyvas also had 1.18 blocks per set to her credit, while sophomore Gabrielle Basinski racked up 38 digs.

Also earning spots on the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic All-Tournament Team were Bluffton's McFarlin and Lauren Weisgarber, Capital's Courtney McCracken, Franciscan's Mary Moore, Marietta College's Hunter Barnes, Oberlin College's Meredith Leung, and Bradford's Kirsten Platz and Christina Rauh.

Next, Wooster opens North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 7 p.m. tilt at Ohio Wesleyan University (9-4) on Friday, Sept. 23.
