Balanced Attack Propels Scots Past Yeowomen

WOOSTER, Ohio - Three student-athletes recorded double-digit kills and junior Taylor Mathews notched her eighth double-double of the year as The College of Wooster volleyball team topped Oberlin College 24-26, 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 on Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium.

Senior Anna Emmick and her Wooster (12-3, 1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) teammates appeared to have the first set tilted back in the Fighting Scots' favor with a 5-0 run that put Wooster up 18-16, but Oberlin (4-7, 0-2 NCAC) scored four of the last five points to win the frame. During Wooster's five-point swing, Emmick was a part of two blocks – the first with classmate Megan Mey, and then one with sophomore Marija Cyvas – and added a kill during that stretch. Later in the frame, senior Lydia Webster smashed down a kill to put Wooster up 23-22, but then the Yeowomen took over.

Junior Taylor Mathews notched her eighth double-double of the season with 37 assists and 15 digs.

Webster paved the way for Wooster in the second set as the senior middle hitter rattled off five kills on 10 swings, and the Scots hit a collective .342 for the set. The senior helped spark a 5-0 run in the closing stretch of the set as three different Scots had a kill on consecutive points as Wooster opened up a six-point lead at 24-18.

In the third set, Wooster strung together a 7-0 clip to open up an eight-point lead at 15-7. During that stretch, Emmick and junior Ksenia Klue each had a pair of kills and sophomore Jordan Murray served up an ace. Later in the set, Wooster pushed its lead back to eight after back-to-back kills from Klue that made it a 20-12 frame.

Next, Wooster gained separation in the closing stretch of the fourth set, first with a 3-0 run, and then with a 4-0 run. The Scots heated up at the service line as Klue and Webster each placed in an ace. Then, a block by Emmick and Mathews brought the Scots to match point before an Oberlin attack error clinched the match.

Mathews paced Wooster with 37 assists and 15 digs while Klue, Webster, and Mey had 13, 12, and 10 kills respectively. Other notable stats included 11 digs each by sophomore Gabrielle Basinski and Murray and five blocks by Emmick.

Lexi Mitchell led Oberlin with 15 kills and 12 digs.

Notable, the win was the 750th in program history.

Next, Wooster travels to Allegheny College (8-7, 0-1 NCAC) for a 7 p.m. clash on Wednesday.
