Scots Super Competitive with Fifth-Ranked Tigers

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster volleyball team won a set and was right there the rest of the way with No. 5 Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium, but the Tigers ultimately prevailed 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18.

Late in the first set, sophomore Marija Cyvas and senior Anna Emmick teamed up on a block of Wittenberg's (10-3, 4-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) leading hitter to tie the set at 23. Then, senior Megan Mey connected on a kill pushing Wooster to match point. After a Wittenberg kill, Mey connected on her third kill of the fame to make it 25-24. Then, junior Taylor Mathews clinched the set with a dump from the setter position.

Jordan Murray was one of thee Scots with double-digit digs on the afternoon.

In the second set, Wooster (13-4, 2-2 NCAC) and Wittenberg traded points midway through the second set with neither team connecting on back-to-back points when the score was between 14-13 and 18-18, but Wooster was able to claim a one-point edge five times during that stretch, including two times off of Mey kills. Wittenberg finally gained separation with a pair of 3-0 clips, and the Tigers had two blocks on the second one to help close out the set.

Then in the third frame, a block by Emmick and Mey tied the set at 22, but Wittenberg picked up three of the ensuing four points, including one via a Maddie Fischer kill to close out the set. The Scots rallied back from a four-point deficit at 21-17 behind a 3-0 run with kills from senior Lydia Webster and Emmick leading up to the Scots' block.

Wooster was within one as late as 14-13 in the fourth set, but two 3-0 runs by Wittenberg tipped the scale in favor of the Tigers. Junior Ksenia Klue helped Wooster storm back from an early four-point hole with a pair of kills during a 5-1 Scots' run.

Klue led Wooster's attack on the afternoon with 14 kills, while Emmick and Webster combined for 22. Sophomore Gabrielle Basinski paced the defense with 20 digs, while classmate Jordan Murray added 12. Up front, Webster led the way with five blocks.

The Tigers were paced by Fischer's 20 kills and Aubrey Cox's seven blocks.

Notable, Wooster's win in the first set marked the first set the Scots have won off of the Tigers since Sept. 22, 2012.

Next, Wooster is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8 with a 12 p.m. tilt with DePauw University (14-3, 3-0 NCAC).
