All-Around Contributions Propel Scots Past Illinois Tech

The College of Wooster volleyball team utilized a well-balanced effort to top Illinois Institute of Technology 25-19, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19 on Tuesday afternoon at the Keating Sports Center in Chicago.

Freshman Kyana Harris quarterbacked the offense setting up three different hitters – senior Anna Emmick, junior Ksenia Klue, and senior Lydia Webster during a pivotal 3-0 stretch in the first set that pushed Wooster (14-5) out in front at 12-11. Later in the set, the Fighting Scots turned in a 5-0 run behind kills from Webster, sophomore Marija Cyvas, and senior Megan Mey.

Seven different student-athletes recorded a kill in the second set for Wooster. The Scots rattled off nine straight points at one point to open up an 18-9 advantage, as Wooster took advantage of five unforced errors by Illinois Tech (11-12) during that span.

The back-and-forth third set featured four lead changes and eight ties before Illinois Tech pulled ahead for good on a kill from Alyssa Miner at 14-13. Wooster was within one as late as 24-23 after a block from Emmick and Mey. The Scots also pulled within one down the stretch 20-19 on a kill by Webster, at 21-20 on a kill by sophomore McKenzie Reese, and at 22-21 on an Illinois Tech attack error.

Wooster heated up at the service line in the fourth set with four aces, including a pair from Emmick on back-to-back plays that put the College up 13-5. The Scots also had two blocks in the set, including on by Harris and sophomore Ashley Plassard on match point.

Emmick led Wooster on the night with 13 kills, while hitting .429. The senior added five blocks up front to couple with three aces. Webster also had a big night up front with nine kills on 19 swings with no errors.

Harris picked up her first collegiate double-double with 43 assists and 15 digs.

In the back-row, Wooster was led by sophomore Gabrielle Basinski's 21 digs.

Illinois Tech's Irena Grauzinis had 20 kills while Courtney Curcio added 25 digs.

Next, Wooster returns home to take on Hiram College (13-5, 2-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) in a 1 p.m. match on Saturday.
