Wooster's Strong Blocking Game Continues as Scots Sweep Aside Pioneers

WOOSTER, Ohio – Behind another strong blocking performance, The College of Wooster volleyball team raced out to a big lead in the first set, and never looked back during a 25-12, 25-19, 25-17 sweep over Marietta College on Friday evening at Timken Gymnasium.

One match after setting the team record in the 25-point set era with 18 blocks, the Fighting Scots (15-7) tallied 12 on the night.

Wooster's (15-7) blocking game starting clicking during a 5-0 run early in the first set. Seniors Anna Emmick and Megan Mey combined on back-to-back swats that at the time made it a 10-3 Wooster advantage. Later in the set, junior Ksenia Klue and senior Lydia Webster teamed up on a block, that extend the Fighting Scots' lead to 12 at 17-5.

In the second set, Emmick took over. First the senior tallied a kill and two blocks pushing Wooster ahead by three at 15-12, after Marietta (17-12) had tied the frame at 12. Then, later in the set, Emmick had two kills and two blocks in a five-point span, which gave the Scots a comfortable seven-point lead at 21-14.

Wooster's frontline continued to lead the way in the third set, as Wooster hit .393 in the frame with Klue and Mey teaming up for nine kills on 17 swings with just one error in the set. A 6-1 run early in the frame helped Wooster open up a five-point edge at 7-2. Then, later in the frame and double-block by Mey and Webster sparked a 4-0 run to help push Wooster's lead to seven at 20-13.

Klue led Wooster with 14 kills on the evening, while hitting .323. Emmick also turned in a solid match with eight blocks and seven kills.

Defensively, sophomore Gabrielle Basinski and Webster led the way with six digs each.

Marietta was paced by Emily Peters' 13 digs. 

Wooster has a quick turnaround as the Scots travel to Grove City College (10-16) for a tri-match. Wooster will play Westminster College (Pa.) (12-14) at 1 p.m. before taking on the hosts at 3 p.m.
