Wooster Caps Season on High Note with Win Over Oberlin

The College of Wooster volleyball team ended its season on a positive note with a 25-16, 25-18, 16-25, 25-16 win over Oberlin College in the seventh-place match of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Earlier in the day, Kenyon College topped Wooster 25-16, 27-25, 25-23 in the consolation semifinals.

In the day's opener, Wooster (18-11) leaned on senior Anna Emmick in the first set as the middle hitter roared out of the gate with five kills on eight swings in the first set while adding a block.

The second set was a true back-and-forth battle as lead changed hands nine times, while the score was knotted up on 16 different occasions. Stellar play from Emmick led the way for Wooster as she recorded five kills in that frame, while serving up a pair of aces. The Scots warded off a set point at 24-23 on a kill by junior Ksenia Klue, who also had five kills in the frame.

Wooster turned in a more balanced attack in the third set as four Scots had at least a pair of kills with junior Mayia Karagianni leading the way with three in the stanza. Wooster had a four-point lead as late as 19-15, but Kenyon (18-12) closed out the match with a 10-4 run.

Wooster raced out to a 12-5 lead in the first set of the Oberlin (7-20) match, in large part thanks to its senior class that played an integral role during an 11-0 clip. Emmick recorded two kills and had a block during that stretch, while Megan Mey teamed up with Emmick on the block and Lydia Webster recorded a kill.

In the second set, Wooster did a stellar job of holding serve as the Scots had four runs of at least three points. Mey heated up from the outside in the frame recording four kills on five swings, while adding a block.

Later in the match, Wooster's senior class delivered a strong finale to their careers. Webster recorded two kills and two aces, helping put Wooster on top 21-15. Then, Laura Sherer served up a pair of aces to close out the match.

Emmick and Klue led Wooster on the day with 20 kills each, while Emmick added seven blocks over the two matches.

Defensively, sophomore Gabrielle Basinski averaged 7.29 digs per set on the day, while junior Taylor Mathews recorded 21.

Klue finished the season with 271 kills, the fifth-most in program history in the 25-point rally era, which has been in play since the 2008 season.

Emmick capped her season year with a .267 hitting percentage, the third-highest in program history since 2008.

Wooster's 18 wins marked a six-match improve from last season.
