NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – As the final two matches of the first day of the Westminster Invitational, The College of Wooster volleyball team got off to a late start and finished well into Friday night.
Unfortunately, the Scots were on the wrong end of both their matches, snapping a four-match win streak. Wooster fell 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23) to Rochester Institute of Technology in match one, and also lost to host Westminster College in match two, 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21).
Against RIT, Wooster played four tight matches, tying the match with a 27-25 second set. While Wooster reached 20 points in the final two sets, RIT was able to hold off the Scots.
Wooster held the lead for the first half of the third set until the tides turned at 14-all.
RIT ran off with six consecutive points, but to Wooster's credit they fought back for ties at 20 and 21. Yet, RIT won the final four points of the set to go ahead 2-1.
The fourth set was similar as Wooster held an early lead before Westminster took control. Wooster fell behind 24-21, scored the next two points but a service error ended the set.
Amelia Mitchell led the team with 10 kills. Emma Fleck recorded 30 assists, and Lucy Kinser led with 12 digs.
Against Westminster, Wooster opened with a first set win, but that's all they could get. They pulled ahead midway through, leading 16-8 to cruise to a 25-18 win.
However, Wooster could not get going the next two sets. They got close to taking the fourth but once again saw a 3-1 defeat.
Tamara Turner led with 10 kills, Fleck had 26 assists and Kinser led the team with 25 digs. Izzy Cozzie had three service aces.
The Scots (7-6) will return to Westminster on Saturday with two more matches starting at 10 a.m.
