HIRAM – The College of Wooster volleyball team suffered a pair of loss on Saturday, including its opening match in North Coast Athletic Conference play..
In the first match, Hiram College defeated Wooster 3-1 (26-28, 25-14, 25-19, 25-11). In the second, Allegheny College won 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23).
Wooster won a hard-fought first set, 28-26, before Hiram took control of the NCAC contest as Wooster failed to get past 20 points in the final three sets.
In that first set, Wooster had to fight from behind after losing the first five points. Wooster closed the gap when Lucy Kinser and Amelia Mitchell serving.
The two combined for a couple aces as the team took its first lead at 10-9. Hiram went on a small run to go ahead 13-10, but teams started to go back and forth when knotted at 15.
In the final points of the set, the Terriers blew away a set point on a service error, bringing the score to 25-25.
Wooster could not connect on its next set point but did not make that mistake twice. They wrapped up the set with a kill from Jordan Laraway and an attack error ended it.
Laraway connected with eight kills to lead the team. Emma Fleck had a team-high 22 assists. Kinser led the team with 10 digs.
Against Allegheny, each set was close but Wooster fell on the wrong end. Mitchell led the attack with eight kills. Fleck added one additional assist more at 23 and three players finished with a team-high seven digs – Mitchell, Fleck and Tamara Turner.
Izzy Cozzie assisted on four blocks and added seven kills herself.
Wooster drops to 8-10 overall and 0-1 in NCAC play. They will travel to play Geneva College on Tuesday.
