Numerous Scots Log Career-Bests in Home Finale
Wooster falls 3-2 to Wilmington
WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior Tamara Turner turned in a career-high 23 kills in her final collegiate home match, but The College of Wooster volleyball team's comeback against Wilmington College came up just short. The Fightin' Quakers prevailed 20-25, 25-23, 28-26, 22-25, 15-13 on Thursday evening at Timken Gymnasium.
Turner's 23 kills were a career-high by eight. The senior hit .333 on the night and helped Wooster (12-17) finish with 64 kills, a total tied for the sixth-most in a five-set match in the current scoring era. Turner added nine digs and three blocks in Thursday's match. The senior led Wooster's comeback in set four with seven kills on 11 swings, and earlier in the match, Turner put away six points on kills in set two.
Wooster had Wilmington (6-20) out of sorts on the serve early and often. Turner started the match off with an ace, and senior Olivia Kitchen served up four consecutive aces in set one. Kitchen picked apart the Quakers' entire back row, as four different Wilmington players could not handle the senior's serves. Eight of Wooster's 17 aces came in set one, and it marked the second time this fall the Scots have logged 17 aces in a match. The 17 aces are three shy of the program's single-match record.
Kitchen was one of two Scots on the night with five aces. The senior was joined by classmate Amelia Mitchell, who reached five on the night to pull Wooster within 20-19 in the fourth set. Senior Lucy Kinser followed Kitchen and Mitchell with four aces, while Turner had two and first-year Catherine Muzilla added one to get the Scots to 17.
Wooster scored the final six points of set four to turn a 22-19 deficit into a 25-22 win. A Wilmington service error by Kieran Yarkosky closed Wooster's deficit to two at 22-20. Sophomore Kora Burill's kill followed a Wilmington attack error and tied the set before Turner finished for Wooster's 13th kill of the frame. Junior Izzy Cozzie sent the match to a fifth set with a kill.
Wooster was in control early in the fifth, scoring five straight points to open an 8-5 lead. Mitchell and sophomore Jordan Laraway connected on back-to-back kills before Burill and Mitchell stopped Josie Crabtree at the net. However, Wilmington had a pair of 3-0 runs en route to taking the match.
Cozzie and Mitchell had 13 kills each in support of Turner's 23. Sophomore Emma Fleck surpassed 50 assists for the first time. Kinser led the defense with 23 digs.
Sarah Brown had 17 kills and a .412 attack percentage to lead Wilmington.
Next, Wooster concludes its season with a 6 p.m. match at 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University (22-5) on Saturday, November 9.
