The College of Wooster cross country teams kicked off the 2013 season Friday, as they usually do, with the annual Wooster Invitational, a six-team, non-scoring meet in which four races were held – a women's 4K, a women's 5K, a men's 5K, and a men's four mile.
Wooster performed particularly well in the women's 4K and men's four mile, with the Fighting Scots posting five top-10 finishes in each event. In the former, they were led by a pair of first-years making their collegiate debut in Kayla Zboran and Emily Reid, who were runner-up and third, respectively, covering the hilly course in 16:04.4 and 16:13.6. Senior Allison Chin was not far off their pace in fifth (16:48.4), sophomore track standout Hilary Coady, who was making her first cross country start, crossed seventh (16:55.2), and senior Ann Berkow was 10th (17:11.4).
Lauren Buyan, a Wooster junior, ran well in the women's 5K, finishing fourth out of 22 competitors.
In the four mile, Derrick Marshall had a breakout meet as the junior led the Scots for the first time in his career and took fourth overall (22:12.4). Teammate Alex Chabraja followed in fifth (22:21.1) as the race's highest finishing freshman. Also for Wooster, rookie Roy Hadfield, junior Joe David, and senior Morgan Clark came in eighth (22:37.8), ninth (22:41.7), and 10th (22:49.3).
Notable, the Scots' top performance in the 5K was David Brew's seventh-place effort (18:36.1).
Wooster's next competition will be the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships on Saturday, Sept. 7, in Delaware, Ohio.
