NCAA Div. III Championships Qualifiers Announcement

Senior Brian Lief of The College of Wooster men's cross country team will join teammate David Westcott at Saturday's NCAA Div. III Championships, as announced by the NCAA selection committee on Sunday afternoon.

Wooster was already guaranteed a participant in Saturday's championship for the first time on the men's side since 2003 thanks to Westcott's seventh-place time of 25:11.7 at yesterday's NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional.

Lief, on the other hand, had to take the wait-and-see approach. The Scots' senior placed 17th at 25:44.9, and that was good for 11th among student-athletes not on the top two teams, which automatically advanced to the championships.

On Sunday, DePauw University and Case Western Reserve University, which placed third and fourth at the Great Lakes Regional, were among the 16 at-large teams selected for the Div. III Championships. That bumped Lief up to the sixth individual from a non-advancing team within the Great Lakes Region.

The Div. III Championships field is comprised of 16 automatic qualifier teams (top two, seven-person teams from each of the eight regionals), 16 additional at-large teams, and 56 individuals (top seven student-athletes from each regional championship who are not a part of a qualifying team).

Lief and Westcott will compete at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis. at 1:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 17.
