The College of Wooster's men's and women's cross country teams were among the squads named as All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while two student-athletes – seniors Jackson Feinknopf and David Westcott – picked up individual all-academic honors, the coaches organization announced on Thursday.
Wooster's women's team continued its impressive recent stretch of academic success, as the Fighting Scots have now earned the nod for the 14th time in the last 15 seasons. Wooster checked in with a team GPA of 3.47.
On the men's since, Wooster's collected its 13th honor in the last 14 years. The Scots have a 3.34 GPA.
Feinknopf, an anthropology major, was one of Wooster's top three harriers for most of the season. That included at the NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional, where the Bexley, Ohio native was about six seconds off the final all-region pace. Feinknopf covered the Blue River Cross Country Course in Shelbyville, Ind. in 26:07.6, which was good for 44th-place.
Westcott, one of two Scots to qualify for the NCAA Div. III Championships this fall, placed seventh of 265 competitors at the Great Lakes Regional at 25:11.7. Westcott and classmate Brian Lief were the first Scots to compete at the national meet since 2003. He's majoring in psychology.
Criteria for the team honor includes compiling a team score at a NCAA regional meet and posting a minimum cumulative team GPA of 3.10 on a 4.0 scale. Individual honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and finish in the top 25 percent of their respective regional championship meet.
Noteworthy, every North Coast Athletic Conference program had both of its teams earn all-academic honors.
