Davidow Wooster's only two-time men's lacrosse All-American

Steve Davidow When he was at Sewickley Academy, just outside the Pittsburgh area, Steve Davidow played baseball, but when he ventured off to prep school, Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., he took up a new spring sport – lacrosse. With a strong tradition there, Davidow quickly found a passion for, and picked up, the game, and he brought Tabor’s winning ways to The College of Wooster where he lead the Fighting Scots to a significant turnaround, engineering a couple of the best seasons in the program’s 40-year history via an uncanny ability to score goals in bunches.

Prior to Davidow joining the Scots in 1988, they had posted discouraging 1-11 and 2-12 campaigns in back-to-back years. Jon Hind, who had recently taken over the head coaching duties, saw something in Davidow early on and wasted little time getting him into the action as he started all 13 games on the attack line as a freshman. Davidow pumped in 18 goals and added 13 assists, good for 31 points – the second-highest total on the team. More importantly, Wooster would go 5-8, evidence that the team was headed in the right direction.

If he hadn’t already done so, Davidow garnered the league’s attention as a sophomore by more than doubling his previous goal total with 37 en route to second-team all-North Coast Athletic Conference mention. He also matched his assist total of 13, giving him a 50-point season in 14 games to rank as the Scots’ top offensive contributor.

As a team, Wooster would then turn the corner in 1990, compiling a 10-6 record, the squad’s highest win total in seven years due in large part to Davidow’s record-setting campaign. The junior received honorable mention on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-America Team after scoring a still-standing school-record 51 goals, while also receiving first-team nods on the all-region and all-league teams. He also produced the sixth-best assist total by a Scot with 33, resulting in 84 total points – the second-highest total ever recorded in the program.

Having to live up to heightened expectations, Davidow would not disappoint in his senior year, leading the Scots to a 12-4 overall mark – the most wins in a season in team history – and second-place NCAC finish (4-1), only falling short to Ohio Wesleyan University. Davidow produced another incredible statistical season by piling up 49 goals and a career-high 34 assists, and he was recognized with another honorable mention all-American selection – the only Wooster men’s lacrosse player to claim the honor twice.

Davidow amassed 155 career goals and 93 assists during his four years in the Black and Old Gold, good for 248 points, which makes him the second-highest scorer in team history. In addition to his three all-conference citations, Davidow was honored again with a selection to the NCAC All-Decade Team (1984-1993).

Today, Davidow, who received a bachelor’s degree in English at Wooster, owns an eco-friendly children’s store, The Green Egg, with his wife, Tracey, in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. During his down time, Davidow likes to golf, ski, and spend time with his family, which includes children Charlie (5) and Penny (3).
