Jamie Lackner |
After breaking an NCAA Div. III record for consecutive games reaching base safely, Jamie Lackner, a junior first baseman for The College of Wooster baseball team, is included in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd.
Lackner broke the 13-year-old national record, formerly held by Damian Costantino of Salve Regina University, when he doubled in the sixth inning at Marietta College on April 6 for his 61st game in a row reaching base safely via a hit, walk, or hit by pitch.
Since then, Lackner has successfully extended the streak to 63 games going into a match-up against Baldwin Wallace University on Thursday. The streak began at the outset of his sophomore season, as he reached base safely in all 45 games a year ago, batting .420 to go with 26 walks and 17 hit by pitches while also leading Div. III in home runs (17) and RBI (69). This season, Wooster's clean-up hitter holds a .394 average plus 19 free passes (14 walks, 5 hit by pitches).
Wooster has had a number of student-athletes featured in Faces in the Crowd over the years, with the most recent being field hockey standout Amanda Artman in 2010.
