The College of Wooster field hockey team didn't allow a goal during an early offensive surge by Ohio Wesleyan University, took charge offensively near the midpoint of the game, and survived a late scoring spree by the Battling Bishops during a 4-3 win on Saturday morning at Selby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio.

Wooster (10-2, 6-2 North Coast Athletic Conference), which reached double-digit wins for the first time since 2012, dug in defensively in the first five minutes of the game, as that's when sophomore Katie Shideler logged two of her game-high 15 saves, and Ohio Wesleyan (7-4, 4-4 NCAC) couldn't convert on either of its penalty corners during that stretch. Shideler went on to log six more saves in the first half before Wooster found its footing offensively.

Senior Maeven Barry capitalized on a pair of second-chance opportunities late in the first half. First, the senior sent a loose ball off a blocked shot into the cage for the first score of the game in the 24th minute. Then, in the 31st minute, Barry beat Ohio Wesleyan 'keeper Paige Ross on a rebound shot that made it 2-0.

Ohio Wesleyan nearly halved the lead with 10 seconds to go before halftime, but junior Emma Hambright made a defensive save on Maggie Greer's shot attempt.

Wooster found success on penalty corners in the second half. Barry inserted in the 39th minute, and sophomore Sydney Schuster redirected junior Harriet Sudduth's attempt into the cage to make it 3-0.

Ohio Wesleyan's Jamie Grant cut Wooster's lead down to two in the 54th minute with a shot from the right side, but Wooster answered less than six minutes later. Senior Erika Womack delivered the scoring tally off the corner insert from first-year Eleanor Sudduth, and that bumped Wooster's lead back to three.

Ohio Wesleyan made things interesting with a pair of goals in the final six minutes to pull within one, but Wooster didn't allow another shot attempt after Alexis Roberts' goal with 1:24 remaining.

Ross finished with seven saves for Ohio Wesleyan. The Battling Bishops outshot the Scots 35-14 and finished with a 19-9 edge in penalty corners.

Next, Wooster travels to Denison University (10-2, 8-0 NCAC) for a 4:30 p.m. game on Friday, Oct. 12.
