O'Connor's Hat Trick Leads Scots To Win in Opener

Junior Caitlyn O'Connor scores on of her three goals during Saturday's contest against Wittenberg.

Junior Caitlyn O'Connor recorded a hat trick with three goals to lead The College of Wooster field hockey team to a 4-2 win over Wittenberg University in their season opener.

O'Connor put the Scots on the board just nine minutes into the contest when Sydney Schuster found her in front of the cage. After Jensen Bury tied the game toward the end of the first quarter, Schuster gave Wooster the lead back in the second after scoring on her own rebounded shot.

Wooster went ahead 3-1 before halftime when O'Connor created her own opportunity in the 26th minute.

Wittenberg's Bury scored again in the 40th minute to make it a 3-2 game, but O'Connor gave the Scots a better cushion after scoring the only goal in the fourth quarter on a ball that went from Schuster to Katie Agatucci to finding O'Connor right in front of the cage unattended.

Wooster outshot the Tigers 14-10 and held the advantage in penalty corners 8-5.

O'Connor, who was second on the team with 15 goals a year ago, is off to another promising start after recording nine goals through the first five games last season. Her three goals tied a career-high once again.

Katie Shideler made six saves in the cage to take the win for the Scots. Wittenberg's Emma Hurguy made five saves on the other end.

This was the season opener for Wooster, while Wittenberg drops to 0-2. Wooster (1-0) will next travel to Transylvania which is the start of four games on the road.
