WOOSTER, Ohio – The 21st-ranked College of Wooster men's basketball team ramped up the intensity on defense on the second night of the 25th annual Al Van Wie Wooster Rotary Classic and rolled past Mount Saint Joseph University 84-54 on Saturday at Timken Gymnasium.

Wooster (2-0), which only had one steal during its season-opening 108-100 win over Muskingum University on Wednesday, doubled that total less than four minutes into the contest and went on to end the night with 14. That led to an impressive display of team speed with four dunks headlining the Scots' 14 fast-break points during the game.

Junior Danyon Hempy slammed home the first dunk at the 15:15 mark, and that put the exclamation point on a game-opening 11-2 run.

Wooster kept rolling, and thanks to another clinic on good ball movement, the Scots were credited with assists on 20 of their 36 field goals, including one on a feed from Hempy to sophomore Dontae Williams who slammed home a fast-break dunk at the 11:36 mark to cap an 11-4 spurt that upped Wooster's lead to 22-9.

Freshman JG Gillard provided a big spark off the bench in the first half with seven points and four rebounds.

Wooster, which led by double digits from the 12:00 mark in the first half on, saw six players contribute at least five points in the opening 20 minutes, including rookie JG Gillard, who was active at both ends of the floor pairing seven points with four rebounds in just over six minutes of action.

Williams took charge at the onset of the second half with his wide arsenal of moves helping the Scots up the lead to 24 at 54-30 with 17:15 left in the game. The sophomore had a key stick-back during a 4-0 stretch, and shortly after, logged a steal before working the give-and-go with senior Eric Bulic assisting on Williams' fast-break lay-in.

Wooster's other big stretch came with 7:30 left as senior Trey Miller kicked off a 6-0 run with a three-pointer, while defensively, the Scots kept the Lions off the scoreboard for a span of 4:03.

Williams led the Scots in scoring for the second straight night with a game-high 20 points to give him 42 for the Al Van Wie Wooster Rotary Classic. The sophomore added seven boards, four of which came on the offensive end, and passed out a game-high five assists.

Hempy followed with 15 points, while Bulic was active all over the place with 12 points, seven rebounds, and four steals on his stat line.

As a team, Wooster shot 56.3 percent (36-for-84) from the floor, finished with a plus-18 edge in rebounding, and scored 23 points off of Mount St. Joseph's 18 turnovers.

Jake Cropper led Mount St. Joseph (0-2) with 15 points, while Cedric Woods and Devin Young went right down the line with 14 and 13, respectively.

Mount St. Joseph shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field and was kept in check on the glass with 20 total rebounds, three of which came on the offensive glass.

Next, Wooster has its first road game of the season at Hanover College (3-0) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
