Danyon Hempy

The College of Wooster's Danyon Hempy is among the 10 NCAA Div. III men's basketball student-athletes who will compete as part of USA D-3 Men's and Women's Basketball Teams – Brazil Tour 2019, which will take play in July.

"Being selected to play for the USA D-3 Men's Team is an amazing opportunity that I will forever be grateful for," said Hempy. "Being able to represent my school, as well as my country is a dream come true. I want to thank my coaches, teammates, friends, and my amazing family for all of the support over the years that allowed me to be able to participate in opportunities like this."

"I think it's an excellent situation for Danyon playing this summer on the tour to Brazil, added legendary head coach Steve Moore. "I believe it'll be very good competition for him, a good experience for him culturally, and from a basketball standpoint. I'm excited that Danyon has this opportunity."

Hempy and his teammates are scheduled to play four games while in Brazil, starting with a pair of tilts against under-22 teams in Jundiaí (July 10) and Sao Paulo (July 11). Next, the USA contingent will travel to Rio de Janeiro, where they'll take on Queimados on July 14 and Fluminense on July 15.

Off the hardwood, the team will experience educational, cultural, and social aspects throughout the region. While in Rio de Janeiro, the team is slated to stay on the famous Copacabana Beach and tour several iconic landmarks, including Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain.

Hempy, a rising senior at Wooster, is coming off a season in which he was voted to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Great Lakes All-District first-team. The Scots' leading scorer, who also earned D3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region and All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors, poured in 20.6 points per night. He helped lead the Fighting Scots to the program's NCAC-leading 18th conference crown, a 23rd consecutive 20-win season, and a Div. III record 17th consecutive tourney appearance. This past winter, Hempy scored the fifth-most points in program history (618), and he's the second player under Moore to finish a season with at least 20 points per game.
