WOOSTER, Ohio – Colorado College broke a 2-2 tie with a five-goal run spanning the first and second quarters and went on to a 10-4 victory over The College of Wooster in the school's non-league men's lacrosse match-up at a sunny, but cool John P. Papp Stadium Thursday afternoon.
After Wooster (2-4) evened the score at two apiece on a Logan Fitch goal, assisted by Joe Suliman, at the 4:47 mark of the first, Colorado College (5-0) embarked on its game-changing run. The Tigers netted one just 19 seconds after the ensuing face-off and again right before the end of the period. Then, they took advantage of a man-up opportunity at the beginning of the second, and later, added a pair just about a minute apart for the 7-2 cushion.
Patrick Schlick halted the run, converting a pass from Steve Crozier with 4:16 before halftime, and the Scots nearly got a major momentum boost, but a Suliman goal at the buzzer was waved off as the officials ruled that he didn't get the shot off in time.
Colorado College made it 8-3 just 46 seconds into the third quarter and that was the lone scoring until midway through the fourth when the Tigers hit the back of the net, all but sealing the outcome with a six-goal margin and 7:40 remaining.
Statistically, Wooster almost doubled its visitors in total shot attempts (37-20), but Colorado College's accuracy was too much to overcome as the Tigers scored on exactly half of theirs. The Scots also owned a significant advantage in face-off attempts, with Matt Pullara winning 12-of-16 on the day.
In addition to Fitch's and Schlick's goals, Pullara and Matt Ranck each contributed one for Wooster, while the Tigers were paced by James Mauk and Moses Taylor with three tallies apiece.
In goal, the Scots' Jake Kubasta and Matt Magoon split time, each playing a half. Kubasta recorded two saves while being on the tough end of several point-blank shots and Magoon came up with three stops.
Next, Wooster plays its North Coast Athletic Conference opener at No. 14 ranked Denison University (4-1, 0-0 NCAC) Saturday afternoon.
