Goal in 80th Minute Downs Scots

WOOSTER, Ohio -- It took until the 80th minute, but Capital University got the goal it needed as it defeated The College of Wooster men's soccer team 1-0 on Wednesday.

Following a save by their goalkeeper, Capital went down the field in 23 seconds and capitalized on the foot race. Chewy Gordon led Sam Spirk with a pass near the post, and Spirk put it away.

It was an agressive tactic in an agressive game. as the teams combined for 32 shots and six yellow cards. Capital outshot the Scots 17-15 and could not score off their 11 corner kicks.

Will Collis collected two saves in net, while Capital keeper Logan Wiedman made six saves. In the 20th minute, Wiedman got caught a little too far out, but he received some help from his defense when Manny Burton's shot on goal was saved by a defender.

That was Burton's only shot of the game. Bennett Anderson had three shots on goal, while Zacharias Andreou, BJ Tally and Andreas Xenofontos each recorded one.

Wooster contained Gordon from scoring, who entered the game leading the NCAA with a 2.25 goals per game average.

Capital is now 5-1 on the year, while Wooster falls to 3-3-1. The Scots open North Coast Athletic Conference play Saturday when they travel to DePauw University.
