No. 12 CWRU Beats Wooster in Scots' Spring Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 9-0 loss against 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Friday afternoon at Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio.

CWRU (4-0), which had two players ranked in the national top-25 in singles, and the top-ranked doubles team per the November 20 Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings, didn't drop a set in the match. Sophomore Austin Hanna won five games off of 22nd-ranked Matthew Chen, who won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3. Fifth-ranked James Hopper downed sophomore Alon Liberman 6-1, 6-2 in the top flight. Junior Joaquin Abos Amo had some success early against Aaron Umen at third singles, but Umen ultimately pulled away with a 6-4, 6-0 win.

Chen and Hopper, the top-ranked doubles team, split up for CWRU on Friday. Chen teamed up with Zach Hennessey to beat Hanna and Liberman 8-3 at No. 1, while Hopper and John Kasner took care of Abos Amo and senior Nathan Devereux 8-5 at No. 2.

Wooster's (1-1) back in action on Sunday, February 16. Wooster plays DePauw University (0-3) at 9 p.m. and John Carroll University (0-1) at 2 p.m. at Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster.
