KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- After being shutout 3-0 to Eastern Connecticut State University to begin the second half of their spring break trip, The College of Wooster softball team had their bats come to life to win their final five games and move to 8-4 on the season.
To start the streak, the Scots used a four-run fifth inning to mount a 5-3 comeback win over Haverford College. Grace Randall tied the game in the fifth before scoring on Molly Likins' RBI single. Marina Roski then hit a two-run double to make it 5-2.
Up until that point all eight games played had been decided by three runs or less. That was until an 11-2 five inning win over Ramapo College.
Wooster scored six runs in the first inning with most of the damage coming behind a grand slam from Olivia Johnson. Roski had a two-run shot later in the game and after the third inning, the Scots held the 11-2 lead.
Johnson also got the job done on the mound in that game, pitching the complete five innings, striking out seven and allowing just two runs.
Wooster balanced out their scoring in a 10-5 win over Rutgers-Newark. They scored in every inning except for one and jumped out to a 7-2 lead after three innings.
They totaled 17 hits, which included a home run from Heidi Likins and a 4-for-4 performance from Molly Likins. Emmalee Cooke also finished 3-for-3.
Molly and Heidi each had two RBI to lead the way. Marissa Norgrove pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to collect her first win of the season.
Then on Monday, Johnson pitched a gem on the mound to lead the Scots to a 1-0 win over Springfield College. Johnson threw a one-hit shutout, striking out four and walking just one.
Randall's RBI single in the fifth was all Wooster needed in that one.
Finally, Wooster capped off their spring break trip with a 6-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill. Norgrove allowed just three hits in six innings and struck out four for the win.
Wooster scored five in the third inning to pull away as Kendall Lloyd recorded a two-run double in the third to help the cause.
Wooster outscored opponents 33-10 in the final five games.
Through 12 games, Grace Randall led the team with a .432 average (16-for-37) which earned her North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.
Heidi Likins already has three home runs, and Roski's lone home run shot was her 11th, which tied her for the program's career home run record.
The Wooster pitchers combined for a 2.85 ERA. Johnson leaves Florida with a 4-1 record and a 2.50 ERA.
Wooster host Baldwin Wallace University on March 24 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
