Scots Drop a Pair of One-Run Contests in Home Opener

Olivia Johnson was on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel Sunday, allowing just two runs in 7 innings.

The College of Wooster softball team could not extend its five-game winning streak, and suffered a pair of one-run losses, 2-1 and 5-4, to Baldwin Wallace University in their home opener on Sunday.

A pitching duel emerged in game one between Olivia Johnson and Nikki Camarati. Both went the distance and held their opposition scoreless through the first five innings.

Baldwin Wallace scored first after two quick outs in the inning. Sami Minor doubled with two away, and pinch runner Hailey Owens came around to score on a single to center field by Erica English.

Wooster had some two-out magic of their own in the bottom half of the inning and benefited from an early error in the inning. Torrey Totman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Wooster's lone run.

In the seventh, the Yellow Jackets manufactured a runner to second, and Alex Kozich hit what would be the game-winning double. Wooster left a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh to conclude the game.

Camarati moved to 9-1, while striking out nine and allowing just two hits. The lone run scored off of her was unearned. Johnson took a tough loss, allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out eight.

In game two, Wooster jumped to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning when Molly Likins singled to bring home Emmalee Cooke.

Baldwin Wallace tied it in the second on a bases loaded walk, but Heidi Likins gave Wooster the lead once more in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to right-center field.

Totman doubled in the fourth to make it 3-1, but a sloppy fifth inning allowed Baldwin Wallace to tie the game 3-3. The Yellow Jackets had just one hit in the inning but four errors kept runners circulating around the bases.

Heidi Likins came through in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double, but Baldwin Wallace had their own RBI double from Alexis Boledovic in the top of the sixth that ended up being the game clincher.

Abby Cosart took the win for the Yellow Jackets, and Ashley Matousek colelcted the save. Katie Agatucci started but picked up the no decision. Marissa Norgrove pitched 4.1 innings to take the loss, but only one of the four runs on her stat line were earned.

Heidi Likins, Gabby Lakes and Grace Randall each collected two hits in game two.

Baldwin Wallace is now 16-2 on the year, while Wooster drops to 8-6. The Scots travel to Ohio Northern on Thursday for another doubleheader.
