GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The College of Wooster softball team lost 4-3 in nine innings to Denison University but stayed alive in the double elimination North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with an 8-3 win in the nightcap against Kenyon College on Friday.
Wooster moved to 26-12 overall and set the program record for wins.
In game one, Wooster didn't find the scoreboard until a seventh inning rally when pinch hitter Morgan Bailey saw an 11-pitch at bat that ended with a two-run double to right-center to tie the game at 2-2.
Denison and Wooster traded runs in the eighth as Grace Randall hit a sacrifice fly to extend the game. That was all the offense the Scots left, however, as Lindsey Clemson connected on a two-out go ahead home run in the ninth. A 1-2-3 ninth gave the Big Red the win.
Kendall Lloyd, Gabby Lakes and Heidi Likins each had two hits in the game.
Olivia Johnson pitched the complete game to take the loss. She threw 168 pitches and struck out seven.
In game two, Wooster took advantage of a couple Kenyon errors while 15 hits brought home eight runs. A throwing error brought home two in the first for the Scots to take an early 2-0 lead.
Emmalee Cooke had a RBI double in the second, but after three innings the game was knotted at three. Wooster took control from there, scoring five unanswered runs.
The Scots went up 4-3 on an error following a single from Torrey Totman. Marina Roski's RBI double in the fifth made it 5-3.
Lakes hit RBI singles in the fifth and the sixth, and Lloyd hit an RBI double in the sixth to score Cooke.
Cooke, Lloyd and Roski had three hit games while Lakes had another two-hit performance.
Marissa Norgrove collected the win giving up three runs in four innings, and Johnson pitched the three-inning save.
Kenyon was knocked out of the tournament while Wooster will need to win three games Saturday to claim the championship. They open play at 11 a.m. Saturday with another matchup with Denison. DePauw University awaits the winner after taking a 6-0 win over Kenyon and a 1-0 win over Denison.
