The College of Wooster men's track & field team's distance and field student-athletes set the tone early, and the rest of the Fighting Scots' men and women followed suit, as the Black and Gold collected three all-conference certificates on day one of the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships while also logging 13 qualifying times for Saturday's championship heats at Kenyon College's Wilder Track.

First-year Kristian Coleman started off Wooster's championship performances with an all-conference, third-place showing in the triple jump. Coleman's 44 feet, 5.25 inches was just under three feet shy of the winning mark logged by Wabash College's Preston Whaley (47 feet, 5 inches).

Senior David Westcott is now a two-time NCAC champion after taking first-place in Friday's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Wooster's early momentum carried over to the track where senior David Westcott posted the winning time of 9:22.57 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which led off the day's running events. Westcott, now a two-time NCAC champion (indoor 5,000 meters is his other title), held off Oberlin College's Grant Sheely (9:31.34) down the stretch.

Senior Jackson Feinknopf capped Friday's slate with a 32:42.03 in the 10,000 meters, and that went in the books as the third-place time, thus earning the distance standout an all-conference certificate.

Isabelle Hoover's impressive rookie season continued in the 10,000 meters, where she crossed at 38:42.79. She narrowly missed completing the all-conference trifecta consisting of earning certificates in cross country and the longest indoor and outdoor races, as Hoover's time was the fourth-fastest at the meet.

The Scots picked up several key points in both the men's and women's throwing events. Junior Spencer Wilson measured out at 134 feet, 9 inches in the discus, which was good for fifth-place. Wooster scored two competitors in the women's javelin in sophomores Christine Weber and Jena Copley, who placed fifth and sixth at 108 feet and 107 feet, 10 inches, respectively.

Thirteen Wooster student-athletes qualified for the finals in events in which preliminary heats were contested on Friday. That list included a trio of Scots who boasted the top times on the day. Sophomore Matt Klonowski's 1:56.39 led the way in the 800 meters, and that event will be stacked full of Scots come Saturday afternoon, as junior Aedan Pettit (3rd), senior Simon Weyer (4th), and senior Brian Lief (8th) are all slated to toe the start line. First-year William McMichael's 49.72 was the top time in the 400 meters, as was junior Akwia Tilton's 25.74 in the women's 200 meters.

In the men's standings, Wabash is out to the early lead with 58 points. Oberlin (38 points) and Denison University (32 points) round out the top three. Wooster is currently fifth with 28 points.

On the women's side, Oberlin's already substantially distanced itself from the field with 87 points. Allegheny College enters Saturday seven points ahead of third-place Wooster.

Saturday's field events are slated to start at 10 a.m. with the running events to follow at 2:15 p.m.
