Scots Win Wooster Tri-Meet

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster track and field team won 17 events, and the Fighting Scots captured first-place in both the men's and women's standings at Saturday's Tri-Meet, which took place inside the Scot Center. Wooster's men finished with 117 points, with Kenyon College (88 points) and Earlham College (64 points) rounding out the competing teams. Wooster's women tallied 135 points to Earlham's 81 and Kenyon's 63.

The Scots' women accounted for 11 of the first-place efforts, and sophomore Maya Vasta led the way with a trio of blue ribbons. Vasta's 28.11 was the top time in the 15-competitor 200-meter dash, and she ran a leg on Wooster's winning 4x200 relay that came in at 1:54.62. Vasta, who was unopposed in the 60-meter hurdles, crossed at 10.73.

Senior Korri Palmer and sophomore Claudia Partridge were two of the other 4x200 relay legs. Palmer's 8.66 in the 60-meter dash was the top time among the 10 competitors. Partridge cleared 4 feet, 11.75 inches on her first try in the high jump, and that gave her an edge over Kenyon's Duffy Lemire, who needed two tries to get over that height.

In the throws, junior Christine Weber's top marks extended past 34 feet in both the shot put and weight throw, and she won both events over four other competitors.

Wooster's talented sophomore class claimed a trio of top honors in the middle-distance and distance events. Kayla Bertholf's 2:39.02 was tops in the 800 meters, Isabelle Hoover's 5:49.12 edged out Bertholf's 5:49.20 for first-place in the mile, and Rachel Osterhouse crossed at 11:58.81 in the 3,000 meters.

Sophomore Morgan Kromer won the pole vault at 9 feet, 0.25 inch, while first-year Sierra Lapasky rounded out the women's winners as part of Wooster's 4x200 relay.

Junior Drake Pence was the fastest runner on the men's side, as he beat out nine other competitors in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.25, a near-identical clip to the 7.24 he turned in at last week's season-opening Dan Kinsey Invitational. The environmental studies major won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.68.

First-year Korey Simmons had a memorable debut, as he won the 60-meter hurdles at 9.04.

In the jumps, first-year Luke Henke cleared 6 feet, 0.75 inch to win the high jump, while sophomore Kristian Coleman measured out at 20 feet, 1.5 inches while competing unopposed in the long jump.

Sophomore Conor Greene, who had a collegiate-best toss of 35 feet, 10.75 inches in the shot put, won the weight throw with a measurement of 36 feet, 11 inches.

Next, Wooster hosts the Fighting Scots Invitational on Saturday, January 25. Field events are slated for a noon start, with track events set to start at 2:30 p.m.
