SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Senior Anna Gibbs scored a game-high 15 points, and sophomore Sarah Marion scored a career-high 14 as The College of Wooster women's basketball team lost 82-58 to Wittenberg University on Saturday.
Wittenberg shot just under 50 percent (30-for-64), but shot over 60 percent in the first and second quarters to build up a favorable lead by halftime. Kristie Kalis led the Tigers with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Wooster scored the first four points until a 13-1 run changed the tide of the game. Wittenberg built their lead to 16 in the quarter, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Gibbs made it 29-16.
The Scots could not get any closer in the second quarter as a 26-11 differential gave Wittenberg a 55-27 lead at halftime.
In the third, Marion scored nine of her points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, all of which came on three straight possessions for the Scots. Wooster then used a 17-8 fourth quarter to cut the deficit down further.
The Scots shot 35 percent (20-of-58) from the floor and 44 percent from both beyond the arc (7-of-16) and the free throw line (11-of-25). They also outscored the Tigers 12-7 in second chance points.
Wittenberg held the advantage in most other categories including rebounds, 51-33, points off turnovers, 19-10, points in the paint, 42-20, and bench points 45-29. Their largest lead came at 34 midway through the third.
Wittenberg improved to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Wooster dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Wooster returns home Wednesday in another NCAC matchup against Denison University.
