Spc. 4 Robert Blough

The College of Wooster men's and women's golf teams will honor the late Robert Blough '66, a U.S. Army Medical Corps specialist 4 who was killed in action during the Vietnam War, by carrying two PING bags with his name and rank on them this spring and next fall as part of the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program.

Blough, a Wayne County native, served with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam, where he was killed in action on Sept. 7, 1967 by small arms fire while conducting combat operations near Saigon. He was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.

"Being able to participate in the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program is so meaningful because it gives us a chance to raise money and acknowledge an organization that does so much to help families of our injured and fallen service members," said sophomore Lilly Dunning. "Without the sacrifices made by Spc. 4 Blough and many others, we would not have the freedoms and opportunities we do. It will be an honor to carry his name and share his story with the greater College of Wooster community and our opponents."

"It is an honor to have the opportunity to represent Spc. 4 Blough by carrying his commemorative bag," added sophomore David Roney. "The privilege of honoring Spc. 4 Blough provides me with an immense appreciation for the sacrifices that are made for my life and the freedoms we exercise every day. My teammates and I will continue to cherish the experiences we have had with the ability to be a part of the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program."

Blough attended the College for two years before transferring to Western Reserve University. While at Wooster, he was a member of the Scots' men's basketball team and earned a spot on the varsity squad for the 1963-64 season. Blough appeared in three games and scored six points. He also was a member of the jayvee soccer team and Phi Sigma Delta.

Wooster previously carried bags in honor of 1st Lt. John M. Runkle, Jr., a highly-decorated U.S. Army Ranger, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 26, 2011.

The Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program is an awareness and fundraising initiative supported by both the Golf Coaches Association of America and the Women's Golf Coaches Association.

Wooster's bags are sponsored by the Wooster Military Alumni Association, a group of recent graduates who seek to connect alumni who are serving or have served in the military, supporting on-campus programming, and honoring the College's long connection to our country's armed forces. More recently, the group has shifted its focus to providing resources and mentorship to current students who may wish to learn more about the military as a potential post-graduation option.
