TIFFIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's golf team caught Mount Saint Joseph University during Sunday's round, but the Lions edged out the Fighting Scots by two strokes on the playoff hole to keep the Black and Gold from defending their team title at this weekend's 12-team Heidelberg University Women's Fall Invitational.
Two strokes separated Wooster and Mount St. Joseph entering play on Sunday and junior Lilly Dunning was the difference-maker for the Scots. Dunning's closing 82 vaulted her from 15th-place to ninth at 170.
Classmate Megan Gronau carded an 82 on Saturday at the par-72, 6,005-yard Mohawk Golf & Country Club, and that marked the low round on the day for the Scots. Gronau finished just outside the top-10 at 172, while senior Hannah Appleman was right behind with a 173. Appleman tied for 13th-place after an 86 in the opening round and an 87 on the final 18 holes.
Senior Kaci Carpenter fired back-to-back 88s to tie for 16th-place, while sophomore Kayla Audette's 182 rounded out the Scots' lineup. Audette tied for 30th-place.
Wooster carded a 344 on Saturday and followed that up with a 347 on Sunday. The Scots had a 27 on the playoff hole, while the Lions carded a 25. Wooster did finish 11 strokes clear of third-place Allegheny College.
The University of Rio Grande's Rafaella Gioffre fired a 163 to capture the medalist honor.
Next, Wooster's at Westminster College's (Pa.) invitational, which takes place on Saturday, September 21.
